#007 – Legend of the Innkeeper – “The Military Quarter”

Welcome to the Legend of the Innkeeper.  I’m Vastidious and I’m Ariannwyn.  We’re glad you could join us for our 7th episode.

This week we are talking about…

Naxxramas – Wing #3 – The Military Quarter

What did you do this week?

1. Activision releases quarterly results.

In the quarterly results, they specifically mention Hearthstone as one of the reasons that they did well and are looking forward to continued success.  …”the company was “very pleased” with the engagement of Hearthstone and its single-player adventure, Curse of Naxxramas.”

“The fact that last week was our strongest week ever for Hearthstone in terms of both revenue and engagement, I think is a really strong sign,” Morhaime said. “It’s important to note that we still have yet to bring the game to Android and iPhone devices, and if you look at the response we got from bringing Hearthstone to iPad, which brought in millions of new accounts on Battle.net, I think there’s a lot of engagement and opportunity around those platforms as well.”

Getting Better

Since much of the hype had calmed down around Naxxramas, although it picks up each week when a new wing is launched, I thought we need to get back to doing educational segments.

And in order to do our best to serve you, our listener, I’d like to ask for your assistance.  What are you struggling with in the game (other than just plain winning).  What are you questions that you’d love to get answered?  Please take a moment, visit our website and send us your questions.

Will we be able to answer all the questions?  I don’t know.  Maybe, maybe not.  But we will work to find out together how to answer them as best as we can.  You can also email us at vastidious@legendoftheinnkeeper.com.

Should we talk about Arena?  Deck Building?  Constructed?

Main Segment: Naxxramas Wing #3 – Military Quarter

The third wing of Naxxramas has opened up.  Overall what are our thoughts at this stage of working through it?  Normal mode?  Heroic Mode?

Let’s look at each boss individually.

Boss #1: Instructor Razuvious

His hero power is “Deal 3 damage.” (Deal 4 damage in Heroic mode).  I beat him in normal with my Zoo deck.  I did finally beat him in Heroic but I forgot which deck I used. Reward: Dancing Swords (3 mana – 4 dmg / 4 health minion – Deathrattle: Your opponent draws a card)

Boss #2: Gothik the Harvester

His hero power is “Draw a card”  (Draw a card and gain 1 mana in heroic)  I also used my Zoo deck to clear this one out.

Reward: Spectral Knight (5 mana – 4 dmg / 6 health minion – Can’t be targeted by spells or Hero powers)

Boss #3: The Four Horsemen

His hero power is “Draw 2 cards”.  (Draw 2 cards in heroic).  I don’t remember.

Reward: Deathlord (3 mana – 2 dmg / 8 health minion – Taunt Deathrattle: Your opponent puts a minion from their deck into the battlefield)

Once you beat all 3 Heroes, you will receive the card, Baron Rivendare (4 mana – 1 dmg / 7 health minion – “Your minions trigger their deathrattles twice”)

Class Challenges:

The class challenge uses a pre-made deck to go against a pre-selected opponent.  It’s designed to be focused on what each class does well.  This wing saw the release of the Shaman and Warlock challenges.  Win you complete a challenge, you get a special class specific card.

Class Challenge: Shaman

When you complete the challenge you get the Reincarnate card (2 mana, Destroy a minion, then return it to life with full health)

Class Challenge: Warlock

When you complete the challenge you get the Voidcaller card.  (4 mana, Deathrattle: Put a random Demon from your hand into the battlefield.)

Reviews and Emails

iTunes Reviews:

Zuhandenheit – Father/daughter duo is ADORABLE (for casual/new players only) – 4 stars

“This might be the most adorable podcast for Hearthstone.  Hosted by a father and daughter, they have professional and sometimes sassy commentary.  This podcast isn’t geared for advanced players looking for the news and strategy, so that’s not what you will find here.  Honestly, I keep listening because the hosts relate well and I like keeping abreast of where they’re at in the game (kind of like a reality show that you keep up with just to see what they’re up to).  They admit up front that they are casual players and the podcast seems to give them an outlet to stay interested in the game.  Constructive criticism I would provide is differentiating yourself from the other casual Heartstone podcasts that are out there.  These casual podcasts all pretty much do the same thing by running down the basic news, what they played that week, and reading reviews.  I would add a section or re-tool the existing format that makes the content memorable and creative.  Keep up the good work and I hope to have as articulate a daughter as the one that speaks on this podcast.  Both hosts are very good natured.

Heard back from from Chysonllite, who had problems with the audio quality on epsiode #5.  First of all, he’s a guy and episode 6 was MUCH better.

  1. I think the structure of the podcast is pretty good as is. But probably when Naxx wings are done, there might need to be a bit more content as there wont be boss analysis anymore.
My suggestion on something new you can add is possibly a weekly “top 3” segment. This can be both entertaining and educational. I got this idea from a great Pokemon podcast,’The Dex!’ which does a weekly top 5. So each week you could possibly go through a top 3 list of something. So different ideas could include:
    – top 3 favourite cards (which you both agree on)
    – top 3 neutral minion cards (or you can break it down each week like top 3 commons, rares, legendaries)
    – top 3 spells
    – top 3 card emotes (either a card entering the field or attacking)
    – top 3 favourite streamers

This is just my suggestion, let me know what you think! thanks and keep up the good work 😀

  2. Really like the podcast. I’ve been playing hearthstone for several months and have been legend 1 time hopefully working on the second time this month. I know you guys were unfamiliar with some classes, and I would be glad to help out any way I can with questions or games or whatever.

    My battletag is Symbiotic#1478

  3. Hi Vastidious,
I really enjoy your podcast so far. However, I would recommend you 2 to study the name of each card and have a general idea on their mana costs and their texts. Even though you 2 are not pro players, I just think it’s good etiquette for a podcast about Hearthstone to contain correct basic information about the game.
My other suggestion is possibly a section where you guys play with decks we create using your own decks, and then report about the strength and weakness of each of them (with the decklists in the show notes). This way, we can gradually become better deck builders and can adapt to the changing meta better. Besides, I’m pretty proud of my Shaman deck “On the Fly”!! (which can be found on Hearthhead and I would really appreciate if you guys can take a look and comment on that.
Anyway, I really enjoy the podcast so far. Happy hearthstoning guys!

    • Thanks for the suggestions. As for the card names, please forgive me. I have a really bad time remembering card names. I can navigate through a city like a pro but trying to remember card names? That’s just not happening. When we do have cards that we want to talk about specifically, I try to include them in the show notes. When Ariannwyn throws a card at me out of the blue, that’s when I struggle. I’ll see about checking out your deck. I can always use a new deck to play with.
