The desire to keep the game running for a long time motivates Blizzard to price items in the free-to-play game fairly.

“Universally we’ve been getting feedback that our pricing is very generous,” Yong told IGN in an interview. “To us, that’s important. For us, we’re here for the long run. We’re not here to make a quick buck. I want to be playing and working on Hearthstone 10 years from now and from that end, instead of focusing on maximising immediate profit, Hearthstone is really about being able to play it how you want to.”

  • Reminder: Hunter Nerf coming this week!

I know it affects more classes than the Hunter, but it’s primarily targeting the Hunter dominance.  The changes are Leeroy Jenkins is going to cost 5 instead of 4.  And Starving Buzzard is changing from 2 mana to 5 mana.  This will change things up but how drastically we will see.  My suspicion is that it’s going to change a lot just because players are going to move away from the Hunter for a period of time because of the changes.  I think there will be a few purists that might stay around and make it work again.  But you should see a drastic difference in the amount of Hunters in Constructed.

Class Overview #1 – Hunter!

The Hunter class is a unique class in Hearthstone.  Unlike the other classes in the game, one of the biggest benefits to playing a Hunter is the cards that are “Hunter only” encourage the use of beasts and traps.  No other class in the game is quite the same.  This allows for some extremely unique combinations that you won’t see anywhere else.

This is a tough time for Hunters, which is exactly why we decided to go with this class first.  Even though the starving buzzard/unleash the hounds combo is dead, we believe there is still potential to Hunter!  (For one thing, if you play Hunter you have the element of surprise going for you!!)  So let’s jump in and examine this so-called “dead class”.

As a Hunter your hero ability is 2 cost “Steady Shot” which deals two damage to the enemy hero.  It is an amazing ability, and would be over-powered if it were not restricted to the enemy hero.  Even so it’s a great ability to have and allows you to chip away at the opponents health whenever you have extra mana.

Hunter in Arena (Info from http://www.tentonhammer.com/hearthstone/deck-guides/hunter)

The Arena isn’t kind to Hunters since so much of what a Hunter does is based around the use of beasts and combos.  In the Arena it’s really hard to play this way when you have no idea what cards you are going to end up drafting.  One recommendation when you are drafting is to grab the beast cards when they show up.  Always add a bonus point to a card because it’s a beast.  If you have two cards you need to decide between, choose the beast.  Passing up on cards based on stats might mean that you end up with too few beasts in your deck to be fully functional.  I believe the general consensus is that the more beasts in a Hunter deck, the better chance they have to win.

As you draft as a Hunter, while continuing to keep an eye out for beasts, you need to keep in mind the play style that you need to use to win your Arena matches.  One great plan is to grab fast, effective creatures and try to take out your opponent early.  This is a great way to thwart classes that have very strong board clearing abilities, like Mages.  Hunter’s will often best succeed in the Arena by being extremely aggressive and winning by turn 7 or 8.  If you end up in a game that goes past round 10, you’re likely going to lose.  Because of the random nature of the card draw and the play styles prevalent in the Arena, late game Hunter decks work better in Constructed.

So, putting pressure on your opponent is a key to victory.  It’s nice to keep the board clear of minions and but your focus needs to be dealing damage.  If you can get them to trade their minions for yours that is fine.  Remember to use your class ability often and that will get you closer to a win.  The extra 2 damage can really add up.

Which cards should you be looking for as you are drafting that will lead a Hunter to a swift victory?  We’ve listed some of those you should keep an eye out for in alphabetical order.

  • Animal Companion – This is a great card to have in constructed, but if you can get more than two in Arena, that’s a bonus.  The cards you can get from this one are extremely useful and you don’t have any bad options.
  • Deadly Shot – This is a great option in Arena.  Removing those big cards that get played is sometimes a game saver.  Just don’t use it too soon.
  • Gladiator’s Bow – Need I say that this is an amazing card for Arena, if not Constructed.
  • Multi-shot – Cheap way to remove two low cost minions.
  • Savannah Highmane – This is a great card because it not only is a strong card in general but it summons two 2/2 minions.  Hard to work around and a big enough threat that it can’t be left alone.
  • Scavenging Hyena – If you did as you were told, you should have enough beasts to make this card effective.
  • Starving Buzzard – Again a great combo if you have beasts.  But with the changes coming, it will be less often used.
  • Unleash the Hounds – In my opinion, this is a must have for Hunters.  I’ve even used this with a single enemy minion on the board just to clear the board.  Usually that’s in a combination with Hunter’s Mark.

  1. I run what I call the “Death Hunter” ;

    1 Flare
    2 Leper Gnome
    2 Undertaker
    2 Explosive Trap
    2 Freezing Trap
    2 Snipe
    2 Loot Hoarder
    2 Mad Scientist
    2 Unstable Ghoul
    2 Eaglehorn Bow
    2 Dancing Swords
    2 Multi-Shot
    1 Explosive Shot
    * Feugen
    1 Sludge Belcher
    2 Savannah Highmane
    * Sylvanas Windrunner
    * King Krush

    It’s not very good at the moment, and I haven’t tweaked it at all — but if Hunters fall far out of the meta, having six traps might not be a problem at all.

    • Nice. Wish I had Sylvanas and King Krush, although I still get him occasionally with the Webspinner. We will see how things work out this week with the changes taking place.
